Dr. Daniel David Palmer made the first chiropractic adjustment on 18 September 1895, on Harvey Lillard, a deaf janitor who cleaned his offices. Lillard stated that he had been deaf for 17 years due to a “blow” to the head while working. Dr. Palmer asked if he may check Lillard and possibly help him. Dr. Palmer discovered a lump on Lillard’s spine and thrust on it with his hands, performing the first recorded chiropractic adjustment.
Lillard’s hearing reportedly returned after several days. Dr. Palmer created and formulated the modern profession of chiropractic based on the results of that initial adjustment.
The Chiropractic concepts can be traced back to the early Mesopotamians, who recorded spinal manipulations being done to enhance health. The knowledge of the importance of the spine and nerves for health was well known, but only when Dr. Palmer summed up this knowledge as chiropractic, was the profession we know today created.
The name chiropractic is derived from the Greek terms kiro and practos, which mean “done with the hands.” Over the last 100 years millions of lives have been changed by the chiropractic profession with their hands alone.
Chiropractic Today
Chiropractic is now recognized as the most widespread natural healing profession. Chiropractic has achieved this status as a result of the outstanding results it has achieved in assisting millions of people to live more fully.
Today we realize that Harvey Lillard’s spinal “bump” was caused by a misplaced vertebra, which triggered nerve interference and prevented his body from functioning normally. This vertebral misalignment was named Vertebral Subluxation by Dr. Palmer.
While chiropractors do not profess to cure any disease or treat the symptoms of body dysfunction, routine chiropractic care has been demonstrated time and again to be useful as an integral element of a person’s health regimen. A body that is working to its full potential is better able to maintain balance and harmony with its surroundings. As more individuals recognize the value of an interference-free nerve supply and seek the advantages of a chiropractic adjustment, so chiropractic is spreading all across the world.
